About |
|
| Moby Dickens Bookshop
was started in December 1984 by Art and Susan Bachrach. We are a general bookstore, but we
also specialize in Southwest, regional and local interest items. We feature sections
devoted to Native American studies and special selections of Southwest titles in a variety
of genres throughout the store: art, mystery, architecture, gardening, and history, to
name just a few. We have an excellent collection of childrens and young adult books,
and everything else you would expect to find in a well-stocked bookstore. We feature many
local authors in the store with frequent events, and an excellent representation of their
works. |
|
| Throughout the year Moby
Dickens has free events featuring local and nationally acclaimed authors.
We actively support our community and are pleased to find new opportunities to interact
with Taos. |
|
| We want you to be at
home. Please let us know how we may better serve your needs. If you just
found us online please take a look at our new online
store. Local Taos customers shouldnt expect online stock to be 100%
represented in-store, and you can always call the store to place orders directly with any
staff member. |

We have cats at
Moby Dickens!
There is a history of our feline friends at our shop. The first cat was Landau, and he
started a trend. After Landau we had Ishmael then IBID, Moby and Miro. Ruby was with us
for almost 15 years, and she became world famous.
Current residents are Mable & Tony. |

| Moby Dickens
is a long standing member of the American
Booksellers Association. There are many advantages and benefits to shopping
locally. When you shop with local, independent merchants, you make these 10 things
happen: |
|
|
| 1. |
You kept dollars in our economy |
|
For every $100 you spend at one of our local
businesses, $68 will stay in the community. What happens when you spend that same $100 at
a national chain? Only $43 stays in the community. |
| 2. |
You embraced what makes us unique |
|
You wouldnt want your house to look like everyone
elses in the U.S. So why would you want your community to look that way? |
| 3. |
You created local jobs |
|
Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying
jobs for our neighbors. |
| 4. |
You helped the environment |
|
Buying from a local business conserves energy and
resources in the form of less fuel for transportation, less packaging, and products that
you know are safe and well made, because we stand behind them. |
| 5. |
You nurtured community |
|
We know you, and you know us. Studies have shown that
local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. |
| 6. |
You conserved your tax dollars |
|
Shopping in a local business district means less
infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify our community.
Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested
where they belong-right here in your community! |
| 7. |
You created more choice |
|
We pick the items and products we sell based on what we
know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because we
buy for our own individual market. |
| 8. |
You took advantage of our expertise |
|
You are our friends and neighbors, and we have a vested
interest in knowing how to serve you. Were passionate about what we do. Why not take
advantage of it? |
| 9. |
You invested in entrepreneurship |
|
Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American
economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. |
| 10. |
You made us a destination |
|
The more interesting and unique we are as a community,
the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone! |

| Best bookstore in Taos.. has been around forever.. in
the historic district, downtown, in John Dunn Shops (off Bent Street).. rooms full of
books, books books. They have a great collection of books on Taos, about Taos, and by
Taosenos; a large art section; out of print book selection upstairs; a large children's
section in front; huge fiction section upstairs- too many things to list! Cozy laid back
browsing atmosphere, chairs, and cats! |

Pretty great book store.
If I knew that there weren't any photos up of it I would've taken more! They have an
awesome painting of people perusing bookshelves in the front window, very cute. This is a
fun space that has an upstairs to explore. When told of this, we were instructed to greet
the trainees which are the two new resident cats. I greeted them and they were boring, not
very helpful at all ;) |

| What a lovely bookstore. There is a great selection,
the staff are friendly and helpful and it has one of the all-time best names for a
bookstore in history. I highly recommend you buy all your
books from here. |

| Great local bookshop! Make friends with the cat while
you're placing a book order for that hard-to-find or out of print book. A wonderful
selection of solar living, rammed earth and alternative materials books. There's also a
nice children's section to keep the kiddies busy while you're browsing. Go upstairs for
the SciFi, camping, hiking and fiction books, or just to catch a view of the cute little
shops. |
